Distortion #2 — Experience Over Truth

Christianity is not emotionless.

It is not cold.
It is not purely academic.
It is not detached.

There is joy.
There is worship.
There is encounter.
There is the moving of the Spirit.

But when experience becomes authority, truth becomes negotiable.

And that is where distortion begins.

What This Distortion Sounds Like

It often sounds spiritual.

• “I feel like God is saying…”

• “The Spirit told me…”

• “I know what the Bible says, but…”

• “That doesn’t resonate with me.”

• “Don’t put God in a box.”

• “You’re overthinking it.”

It may not reject Scripture outright.

It simply places personal experience above it.

Truth becomes filtered through emotion instead of tested by revelation.

The Core Drift

Experience Over Truth shifts authority from:

• The written Word
  to

• Internal impressions

From:

• Objective revelation
  to

• Subjective sensation

From:

• What God has said
  to

• What I sense in the moment

The result is a faith that feels alive but lacks stability.

If experience becomes the lens through which Scripture is interpreted, then Scripture no longer governs experience.

Experience governs Scripture.

The Subtle Danger

Emotions are real.
Encounters are real.
The Spirit moves.

But emotions are not self-interpreting.

Experiences are not self-authenticating.

Spiritual language does not equal spiritual accuracy.

Without grounding in truth, experience becomes vulnerable to:

• Self-deception

• Cultural influence

• Wish fulfillment

• Charismatic personality sway

• Misattributing feelings to God

The most dangerous deception is the one that feels spiritual.

Where This Distortion Thrives

It thrives where:

• Theology is seen as “dry.”

• Study is seen as unnecessary.

• Feelings are equated with authenticity.

• Disagreement is labeled “quenching the Spirit.”

• Correction is labeled “religious.”

It also thrives in reaction to legalism.

When people escape rigid religion, they sometimes swing into untethered spirituality.

They reject structure entirely.

But freedom without structure collapses into instability.

Not Anti-Emotion — Proper Order

This is not a call to suppress emotion.

It is a call to subordinate it.

Emotion is a gift.
Experience is a gift.

But gifts must serve truth, not define it.

Fire without a fireplace burns the house down.

Fire inside a fireplace warms it.

The Spirit never contradicts the Word He inspired.

The Diagnostic Questions

Ask honestly:

• Do I resist Scripture when it challenges my experience?

• Do I lean on phrases like “God told me” without testing them?

• Do I avoid theological depth because it feels uncomfortable?

• Do I equate intensity with authenticity?

• Do I treat disagreement as hostility?

If so, experience may have replaced authority.

The Corrective Vision

Healthy Christianity is:

• Doctrinally anchored

• Spiritually alive

• Emotionally expressive

• Biblically governed

Truth does not extinguish experience.

Truth purifies it.

Emotion is strongest when anchored in revelation.

Worship is deepest when rooted in doctrine.

The Spirit does not bypass the mind.
He renews it.

Experience without truth becomes chaos.

Truth without life becomes dryness.

But truth governing experience produces maturity.
